David Littlejohn was born in San Francisco in 1937 and attended Junipero Serra High in San Mateo before graduating in 1959 from UC Berkeley, where he studied architecture. After earning his Ph.D. from Harvard he began teaching in the English Department at UC Berkeley in 1963 and later in Graduate School of Journalism. In a parallel and symbiotic career, Mr. Littlejohn was "critic at large" for public television station KQED (1965-75), and later, with PBS (NET)." He was arts and culture critic for the Times of London (1975-89) and then the Wall Street Journal (1990-present), with subjects ranging from the Rolling Stones to the Ring Cycle, from Cézanne to Burning Man. Having published 14 books and nearly 400 critical reviews, Professor Littlejohn earned awards including a University of California Distinguished Teacher Award, a Fulbright lectureship to France, and a special award from the American Institute of Architects. He died in Kensington, California on June 4, 2015.
